Network Configuration (nondial-up users)

This section describes the necessary protocol configurations for Direct to function on an Internet-connected network. Note: This is a broad overview. For specific details on configuring a proxy server or firewall, please consult the manufacturer's documentation for the device.

Protocol Summary

Direct uses the following protocols to deliver services to our clients.
  • HTTP-TCP Port 80 - standard for World Wide Web pages.
  • HTTPS-TCP Port 443 - standard for secure World Wide Web pages.
  • Direct Host Access-TCP Port 443 - a standard protocol for secure communication. (Host Access only)

Network Configuration

The initial Direct download page is accessed over HTTPS (Port 443). Once Direct is installed on the client, it connects to the Direct server over the HTTPS protocol (Port 443) and SSL (Port 443), which are used for all future data transfer during the session.

Firewall Instructions

The following firewall configurations are needed to connect to Direct services. These IP ranges can be verified at www.arin.net.

    IP Ranges

    • 64.57.144.0/20 (the explicit range is: 64.57.144.0 to 64.57.159.254)

    Ports

    • 80
    • 443

SOCKS Proxy Setup

    SOCKS Proxy Server Instructions

    • Start SOCKS service on the proxy server. NOTE: The SOCKS proxy service typically is separate from any Web proxy services on the proxy server.
    • On the Web proxy service:
      • Open TCP Ports 80 and 443 to direct.ftpsllc.com
      • Open TCP Ports 80 and 443 to express.ftpsllc.com (Only needed when using the Demo ID)
    • On the SOCKS proxy service:
      • Open TCP Port 443 to ha1.ftpsllc.com (TN3270 Host Access users only)
      • Open TCP Port 443 to ha2.ftpsllc.com (Tandem Host Access users only)
    • Ensure that the Direct client is setup as described in the "Client Setup In a SOCKS Proxy Environment" section below.

Client Setup in a SOCKS Proxy Environment

    • Double-click on the Direct icon. The Logon Screen will display.
    • Click on the "Options" button.
    • Select the "Connect through a Socks proxy server" option.
    • Enter the user's Socks Address.
    • Enter the user's Socks port (typically 1080).
    • Execute the "Test" button to verify success or to determine where failure is occurring.
    • Click OK to save proxy settings.
    • NOTE: These settings are saved on the PC, so this procedure will need to be repeated on each PC being used to access Direct.

    Troubleshooting

You can manually test connectivity by performing the following step. Copy and paste the text from the "Manual Test Command" column into a Windows Command prompt and press Enter. If successful, you will be presented with a blank screen. On failure you will see something similar to "Connecting To [endpoint]...Could not open connection to the host, on port [port #]: Connect failed".
Name URL Port Manual Test Command
    Express express.ftpsllc.com 443 telnet express.ftpsllc.com 443
    Host Access ha1.ftpsllc.com 443 telnet ha1.ftpsllc.com 443
    Direct direct.ftpsllc.com 443 telnet direct.ftpsllc.com 443
    Tandem Host Access ha2.ftpsllc.com 443 telnet ha2.ftpsllc.com 443

    Problem Check
Loading Initial Logon Page HTTP - TCP Port 80 (direct.ftpsllc.com)
